Unverständliche Schiedsrichterentscheidungen in einem unerwarteten Dameneinzel-Finale
Am Ende weinte die wütende Judith vor Freude
A report by Baron Chan
Judith Meulendijks cried in joy. After beating two Hong Kong Chinese in a roll, Judith got her second ever Grand Prix single trophy here in Macau (her first win was 10 years ago). By winning with the score of 18:21, 21:10, 21:11 against the first time finalist young Hong Kong Chinese YIP Pui Yin, she becomes the ladies single champion in the 4* Macau Open Championship 2006.
In this dramatic and emotional final game, two players started by showing their utmost determination in getting their long-awaiting championship. Two rare final participants played carefully in the first game with level rally and occasional mistakes. Score went on one by one on each side until 18:18 when one of the climax of the match happened.
Trotz Aufschlagfehleransage wurde weitergespielt
Pui Yin serve and the service judge called out “service fault” and the rallies still continue, finally Judith hit the shuttlecock out of the court. However, the umpire announced a score went to Pui Yin without any recognition of the service fault Judith immediately complained to the umpire. Yet, helplessly, she was refused to talk over about it. Anger, frustration and hopelessness went straight away to her head. She refused to continue the match and the chiefcoach of the Dutch team, Martijn van Dooremalen rushed to the referee table with the similar feeling. However, complaint was in vain. Moreover, Judith was given yellow card warning for her poor attitude. Her emotion was greatly disturbed and quickly lost the last two points. Her resentment towards the unfair judgment could not be soothed by only the time of two points. She smashed her racket hardly to the ground. Once again, the umpire asked her to calm down and requested a talk.
Rote Karte ohne Folgen
But she refused as she thought it was the break time and she needed the break to discuss with her coach. Finally, a red card warning was given to her. When everyone in the stadium thought that the game would start again at the score of 1:0 taken into account of the red card warning, the second game started at 0:0. When everyone in the stadium thought that Judith would be greatly discouraged by the unhappy incident and Pui Yin would get the most advantage and got her first trophy, story did not go in line with the audience’s script.
Judith kontrollierte die Sätze zwei und drei
In the second and in the last game, Judith controlled the shuttle and the speed of the games very well. She did not show any signal of disturbance by the abnormal ruling. Yet, on the other hand, Pui Yin’s power and speed deteriorated steeply. As a result, the last two games were finished with a rather large margin. Finally, Judith cried in joy and she was the focus.
Reichlich Kritik am Umpire
“The umpires were just confusing”, commented by the chiefcoach van Dooremalen on the two chaotic judgments happened in the end of the first game. “He simply refused to acknowledge the service fault while only wrongly focusing on the shuttle out… the umpire did not communicate well the players, he should try to listen to the player instead of refusing any communication… it is also incorrect by not starting the game as 0:1 when a red card warning was given.”
Perhaps, the standard of the umpires in this championship should be an important agendum in the evaluation meeting. Judgments of the line judges were greatly questioned during the whole championship as well.
“Hör nicht auf ihn”
The Dutch coach continued: “I told her that she may be one point behind already due to the red card. And thus I ask her to focus on her own tactics and be concentrated. Let the chief umpire speak but don’t listen to him.” It may be the reason of her calmness after the incident.
Das Spiel gegen Zhang Ning war das beste
Judith talked about the Quarterfinal-victory versus Zhang Ning: “I still think the match against Zhang Ning was the best match of mine. I am not sure about how well my performance was today in the final. But I am sure, mentally I have paid 110% effort just now. I have played really good matches this week and it no doubt helped boost my confidence in the coming tournaments. But I am quite tired now. I think I will take a few days of rest before I move on to the Thailand Open.”
Ergänzung zum obenstehende Bericht durch Edwin Leung: I have met the deputy referee Mr. Henry after the finals. He admitted the mistakes should be reponsible by both the Malaysia umpire and the Singapore sevice judge. The rally should be finished and the point should be given to Judith. The umpire himself should raised the question to the service judge, In case the umpire havn't do so, the service judge should remind the umpire that he already called "service fault", and every disputes could be settled. On the red card, he admitted the point should be started at 1:0.

Das Match of the Day...
